Lynchburg Hillcats rally, walk off with win over Carolina in extras

The Lynchburg Hillcats walked off on the Carolina Mudcats, 7-6, in eleven innings in front of a record-high 5,840 fans at City Stadium on Friday night. It was the second time in three nights the Hillcats have won in walk-off fashion. Matt Weaver singled home David Rohm to score the winning run. Weaver had three RBI in the game. William Beckwith and Robby Hefflinger each contributed home runs in the win.

Today, all across America, people with end-stage cancer, ALS (often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”) and other diseases are nearing the end of life. They and their loved ones are struggling to grieve and cope. Enamored by medical wizardry to forestall death, we can barely grasp what’s going on when the time comes to say good-by to a parent or spouse. Yet a time does always come when modern medicine either cannot forestall death, or only at the price of great suffering.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), chlorine levels of four parts per million or below in drinking water—whether from a private well or municipal reservoir—are acceptable from a human health standpoint. Inexpensive home drinking water test kits (from $5 on up) that can detect levels of chlorine and other elements in water are widely available from online vendors. Administering the tests is easy and can provide parents with a way to involve kids in science for a practical purpose right at home.
