Cardiothoracic surgeon Jerome McDonald, MD, FACS, has joined the RMH Heart and Vascular Center team as medical director of the cardiothoracic surgery program. Dr. McDonald brings to RMH special knowledge and expertise in minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic (chest area, including lungs) surgery.

It’s hard to believe that it has been nearly four years since I was given the tremendous opportunity to serve as Virginia’s 14th Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Teaming up with Gov. Bob McDonnell and Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Todd Haymore to help lead the Commonwealth’s number one industry has truly been one of the greatest experiences of my life.

Americans are observing Veterans Day. Some will observe it with a day off from work or checking out the special Veterans Day sales that will be held in department stores. But the real meaning of the day should be to think about the great sacrifices of the men and women who deserve to be honored.

The production of sugar has indeed taken a huge environmental toll. “Sugar has arguably had as great an impact on the environment as any other agricultural commodity,” reports the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), citing biodiversity loss as a result of the “wholesale conversion of habitat on tropical islands and on coastal areas” to grow sugar.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says the 2013 apple crop is excellent and harvest is coming along nicely.

Virginia apples are in season, and according to growers this year’s crop is top-notch. Apples were brought to North America by European colonists. With more than 7,500 varieties, they are one of the most widely cultivated tree fruits.
