It’s been 11 years since 9/11, and of the countless lessons we’ve learned since then, here are 10 of the most important:

Two Virginia Cavaliers were recognized for their performance in the 17-16 victory over Penn State. Steve Greer tallied a career-high 15 tackles to be named the Linebacker of the Week, and senior Oday Aboushi, who had 12 knockdown blocks, was named the Offensive Lineman of the Week.

Republican Senate candidate George Allen went on the attack on the Obama administration on Monday on a key Republican talking point regarding defense budget cuts.

The James Madison football team, led by redshirt junior running back Dae’Quan Scott (Staunton, Va./Robert E.Lee) and redshirt-senior quarterback Justin Thorpe (Richmond, Va./Varina), turned in a dominant first-half performance as the Dukes grabbed a commanding 28-0 lead over visiting Alcorn State going into halftime before coasting to a 42-3 win on Saturday night at Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field.

Nearly $12 million will be invested in facilities and infrastructure improvements at Wintergreen Resort over the next 16 months by the James C. Justice Companies.

The ranked teams in the Missouri Valley Football Conference performed so well this past weekend that Northern Iowa lost its game but still rose in The Sports Network FCS Top 25 on Monday.

AugustaFreePress.com editor Chris Graham talks sports with Jim Bresnahan, the host of “Online with Jim Bresnahan” on WREL-1450AM in Lexington, Va. The topics today include a wrap of the weekend in college football, a sneak peek at the opening of the NFL season and the ongoing saga involving Washington Nationals’ ace Stephen Strasburg.

Logan Thomas only had 44 seconds to keep Virginia Tech’s ACC title hopes from possibly being extinguished in the season opener. After struggling most of the night, Thomas drove the Hokies into field-goal range in the waning moments. Cody Journell, who had missed a 38-yarder earlier in the game, was perfect on the try from 41 yards to send the game to overtime, where another Journell field goal, this one from 18 yards, proved the difference in a 20-17 win over Georgia Tech Monday night.

Lance Armstrong cheated. I denied the lie for as long as I could. I wanted to hold out for the hero who inspired many of my family and friends. I wanted to believe that such a cheat was below a champion like Lance. But I cannot continue to fool myself.
