“Real power – the power to save, transform, change – rests not in political parties, presidents, or protests, but in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.” This was just one of the many banners on the Facebook page of Election Day Communion (EDC), a movement which has been grabbing the attention of individuals, congregations, schools, and groups across the United States since August of this year.

Disaster preparedness program sees increased interest

September marked the ninth annual National Preparedness Month, a concentrated awareness and disaster preparation campaign sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission (CSPDC) used the month to showcase the Valley’s regional disaster preparedness and mitigation program, Shenandoah Valley Project Impact (SVPI).

Harrisonburg, Rockingham celebrate International Walk to School Week

Twelve area schools will join others from around the world Oct. 1-5 to celebrate International Walk to School Week. Students from Waterman, Keister, Spotswood, Stone Spring, Cub Run, Ottobine, South River, John C. Myers and Pleasant Valley Elementary Schools; Thomas Harrison and Skyline Middle Schools; and Turner Ashby High School will be walking and rolling to school during the first week of October

General, pastor help FMS with Blessing of the Colors

Brig. Gen. Flora Darpino admits to being “vertically challenged,” and that as a result she isn’t always among the best competitors in running events or on the obstacle course. “But I will tell you, every time I’m out there, I am absolutely the best I can be. I am the best I can be individually, and that’s what you should strive to be,” said Darpino, the commander of the Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School, who served as the keynote speaker at Fishburne Military School’s Blessing of the Colors ceremony on Wednesday.

Fishburne taps Morrison for superintendent position

The new superintendent at Fishburne Military School is a familiar face in the FMS community. Gary R. Morrison, a 1981 graduate of Fishburne who also served on the faculty and later as the director of admissions, was named to the top administrative position at the school at a meeting of the Fishburne-Hudgins Educational Foundation Board of Trustees.

SHD: Front door to the Valley

You don’t see 90 percent of what goes on at Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport. “Many times when businesses, companies and individuals are looking at investing in the region, they’re going to arrive through the airport. They’re not going to take the bus to town. That’s the old saying. They’ll arrive on an aircraft. We see ourselves as being the front door to the community and ambassadors for the community, and we take that responsibility very seriously,” said Greg Campbell, the executive director at SHD.
