Maury River Senior Center to Offer Flu Shot Clinic

mrsc-headerMaury River Senior Center, in conjunction with the Buena Vista CVS/pharmacy, will offer a flu shot clinic on Friday, November 8, from 10am until noon. Flu shots will be available for any adult, but those wishing to receive the vaccine must register in person at MRSC by Friday, November 1.

Flu shots are available at no cost to Medicare beneficiaries, with advance registration. For those who are not enrolled in Medicare, insurance information will be gathered at the time of registration, and administered at the price approved by the insurer. For those without insurance, flu shots will cost $31.99, payable in cash or check only.

Those participating in the flu shot clinic who are age 65 or older will receive the “extra strength” dose recommended for older individuals.

Vaccination is the best way to help protect against influenza. Although vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older, it is especially important for older adults. It is also helpful to take preventive measures, such as covering coughs, washing hands, and staying away from people who are sick, but these cannot replace vaccination as the best method of protection.

Influenza can be a very serious and potentially life-threatening disease. On average, influenza-related complications lead to 226,000 hospitalizations and anywhere from 3,000 to 49,000 deaths each year in the United States. More than six out of 10 of these hospitalizations and nine out of 10 of these deaths occur in people 65 and older.

To register for the flu shot clinic, individuals may visit MRSC Monday through Friday from 8:30am until 4:30pm. Questions about this or any MRSC activity can be answered by calling the Center at 261-7474.
