The national average price for regular unleaded gasoline has increased every day for nearly three weeks for a total of 20 cents per gallon. Gas prices had previously dropped for a record 123 consecutive days before beginning to rise again on January 27.

The second-ranked UVA baseball team finished off a series sweep of East Carolina after taking both ends of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Clark-LeClair Stadium in Greenville, N.C. The Cavaliers (3-0) rolled to a 9-2 win in Game 1 before scoring a pair of eighth-inning runs to break a 2-2 tie and win the nightcap, 4-2.

The No. 7 UVA women’s lacrosse team (0-1) opened the 2015 season with a 6-5 loss to No. 5 Northwestern (2-0) in the Cobb County Classic at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga.

The Waynesboro Y year round competitive swim team, SMAC, (Shenandoah Marlins Aquatic Club) hosted a tri meet against CYAC (Charlottesville Y Aquatic Club) and Staunton Y on January 31.

UVA football head coach Mike London announced several coaching position changes on his staff today. Associate head coach for defense/defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta will now work with the UVa safeties and Mike Archer will move from safeties to linebackers. Archer has also been promoted to associate head coach and Brian Wetzel has been named a graduate assistant coach.

A witty sign showing up at climate rallies proclaims: “Save the Earth – It’s the only planet with chocolate!”, and for good reason. The Virginia House of Delegates passed its amendments to the 2014-2016 biennial budget Thursday, setting aside $99.5 million for the next rainy-day fund deposit, and eliminating $42.5 million in debt and $10.2 million in fees proposed by Governor McAuliffe.

On Thursday, Senate Bill 785, a bill to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender public employees from workplace discrimination, was tabled in the House General Laws subcommittee 4, effectively killing it for the remainder of this session.
