Report: Homeless rate down 8 percent in Virginia

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced today the state is making significant headway toward the goal of reducing statewide homelessness. Citing data collected by local Continuum of Care groups across the Commonwealth, compiled by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development and the Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness, the governor announced that overall homelessness has declined 8 percent from 2010 to 2012 and for families the reduction has been even more pronounced, an 11 percent reduction. Additionally, there has been a drop of 36 percent in the number of people experiencing chronic homelessness in Virginia.

Evangelical leaders call for bipartisan work on immigration

More than 150 Evangelical leaders today called on President Obama and Congress to begin working on broad immigration reform legislation that reflects American values, including human dignity, family unity and respects the rule of law. The evangelical leaders represent congregants from various denominations including the Assemblies of God and the Southern Baptist Convention which are increasingly Latino. Of the nation’s 52 million Latino population, almost 7 million belong to Evangelical churches, according to Pew Hispanic Center.

Staunton appoints new City Council clerk

The Staunton City Council appointed Linda L. Little to the position of city clerk at its November 8, 2012 meeting. Ms. Little will assume the city clerk duties on January 1, 2013. She replaces Deborah A. Lane, who is retiring at the end of December after thirty years of service to the City, with twenty-two of those years as clerk.

Report: Record year for Virginia peanuts

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced today that Virginia’s peanut yield is forecast to be 4,200 pounds per acre this year, up 200 pounds per acre from the previous month’s forecast. If realized, this would be a record yield. Production is estimated to be 84 million pounds, up 37 percent from last year. Producers are expected to harvest 20,000 acres in 2012.

AAA: Gas prices expected to decline through Thanksgiving

Prices at the pump continued their decline for the fourth straight week, moving to their lowest level in more than 100 days. The national average price for a gallon of regular self-serve gasoline dropped to $3.46 Friday. This price is 4 cents less expensive than one week ago and 35 cents less expensive than one month ago.
