Staunton appoints new City Council clerk

Chris Graham

The Staunton City Council appointed Linda L. Little to the position of city clerk at its November 8, 2012 meeting.  Ms. Little will assume the city clerk duties on January 1, 2013.  She replaces Deborah A. Lane, who is retiring at the end of December after thirty years of service to the City, with twenty-two of those years as clerk.

Ms. Little has been employed as a paralegal in Staunton’s Office of the City Attorney since 2006.  Prior to joining Staunton, she was deputy clerk for Augusta County General District Court and worked for the law firm of Vellines, Cobbs, Goodwin & Glass.  Ms. Little is also a past member of the City of Staunton Planning Commission, where she served as chairman from 1995-2000.

Ms. Little will continue with her duties as paralegal in the Office of the City Attorney in addition to the city clerk duties.  City Council considered this appointment in several closed sessions and concluded that utilizing existing staff knowledge and experience, along with consolidating the responsibilities of two positions, will allow for even closer coordination and efficiencies, while also realizing budgetary savings.  Mayor Lacy King commented, “We will miss working with Debbie Lane and wish her all the best in retirement.  At the same time, it is exciting to have Linda take on this important role and I look forward to working with her.”

Under provisions of its Charter and Chapter 2.30 of the City Code, Council appoints a city clerk who serves as clerk of council, clerk of the planning commission, clerk of the board of zoning appeals and clerk to such other boards and commissions as Council may designate.
