One in three households own a gun. That means two in three don’t. Wonder what that might mean? Not to say that everyone among the two in three that don’t own a gun by definition are automatically in favor of strict gun control, but let’s just say this – there’s a reason those folks have enacted their own strict household gun-control policy.

Mark Warner is known as a different breed of Democrat. Among the areas where he has stood out has been his steadfast support of Second Amendment rights. A comment posted by the senator to his Facebook page on Monday in the wake of the tragic events at an elementary school in Connecticut that left 27 people dead – including 20 first-grade students – shows that Warner is moving in a different direction on gun rights.

McDonnell announces School Safety Task Force

While the nation continues to mourn the horrific and senseless murders that took place at the hands of a lone gunman in Newtown, Conn., Gov. Bob McDonnell on Monday announced a state plan to review school safety in Virginia at all levels and to identify statewide and locality, school division, college and university resource needs to ensure that we are doing everything humanly possible to keep our children, young people and educators safe while they are in the classroom.

With the campaigns over, our leaders must roll up their sleeves and get to work on the serious financial decisions facing the nation. Congress has known for more than a year that automatic budget cuts and tax increases loom in January, but they’ve left all the work to be done at the last minute. They need to hear from us that we expect them to make a balanced deal to preserve programs that strengthen our nation while making sensible budget cuts to programs that are wasteful or unnecessary.

McDonnell: State will not pursue its own health benefits exchange

In that context, then, we have the news release from the McDonnell administration issued at 4:35 p.m. Friday reporting that Virginia will not be pursuing a state-based health benefits exchange for 2014.
