The Reconvened Session of the General Assembly that met last week concluded work for this year on the most significant funding program for transportation infrastructure approved by the legislature since the historic special session in 1986.The bill that had previously passed the legislature in the 2013 Regular Session was sent to the Governor for his approval and signature. He proposed a series of amendments that were voted on last Wednesday and approved by the House and the Senate.The Governor will now sign the bill into law.
U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) today asked Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to take action to protect military families from unsafe levels of lead in drinking water. Recent tests at two Hampton Roads Navy child care centers found lead in drinking water that far exceeded Environmental Protection Agency safety levels. Lead exposure has been found to cause serious medical issues including permanent damage to the brain and nervous system, which can result in behavioral and learning problems. Sen. Warner urged Secretary Hagel to confirm that appropriate testing has occurred at other military facilities across all branches of the military services.
Throughout the 2013 General Assembly Session, nearly 60 transportation and business groups representing a diverse cross section of industries and associations in all parts of the Commonwealth endorsed Gov. Bob McDonnell’s Virginia’s Road to the Future transportation funding and reform plan. The organizations listed below have now endorsed the governor’s amendments to make the legislation easier to implement and to address legal concerns about the bill and are urging the General Assembly to move the amended legislation forward.
Gov. Bob McDonnell today completed his review of the major transportation funding compromise passed by the General Assembly in late February, and in the process proposed amendments to the compromise reducing the titling tax increase and also reducing the controversial fee on alternative vehicles by 36 percent.

Virginia junior guard Joe Harris (Chelan, Wash.) and junior forward Akil Mitchell (Charlotte, N.C.) were named to the 2012-13 All-ACC Basketball Team. Harris was a first-team selection and Mitchell was named to the third team. UVa senior guard Jontel Evans (Hampton, Va.) was named to the ACC’s All-Defensive Team.
After 27 years the General Assembly finally made some progress towards meeting Virginia’s transportation needs. Mattis, Commander of U.S. Central Command, and Admiral William H. McRaven, Commander of U.S. Special Operations Command. The hearing follows Kaine’s visit to the Pentagon yesterday to meet with Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Deputy Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, Chief of Staff of the Army Ray Odierno, and employees of the Department of Defense.
