Issues In Aging radio show discussed issues related to healthy aging with Robin Hawks, Joyce Nussbaum, and Sharon Strang. Robin Hawks, Blue Ridge Community College, discussed the Aging in Place program which began this fall. The certificate program is designed to help students better understand the needs of older adults from multiple aspects.

Exploring Virginia’s botanical history through the centuries

The story of Virginia’s Floras, both past and present, will be told in the Shenandoah Valley on Thursday, at 2 and 7 p.m. at Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) in Weyers Cave. Exploring Virginia’s Botanical History through Three Centuries, featuring Dick Cheatham as John Clayton and Donna Ware as herself, will be the topic of the 75-minute program. The word “flora” is the technical term used by botanists to describe a guide to plants living in a particular area. Thus a Virginia Flora is a guidebook to all the documented plants with sustainable wild populations in the commonwealth.

BRCC schedules events for Black History Month

Blue Ridge Community College welcomes two of the historic Tuskegee Airmen for a Black History Month event on Tuesday, Feb. 5, in the Plecker Workforce Center auditorium from 12:30-2 p.m. Grant S. Williams, Sr. and Harry Quinton, both of Tidewater, VA, will recount their memories of serving with the famed Tuskegee Airmen: the first African-American military aviators, mechanics, and air crews in the United States armed forces. A reception will follow in room P126B.

Almarode to lead RMH Emergency Services

Marcus Almarode, RN, CEN, has joined RMH as director of emergency services. Almarode, a native of Mounty Sidney, earned his associate’s degree in applied science in nursing from Blue Ridge Community College before receiving his bachelor’s degree from Eastern Mennonite University. He has 22 years of experience as a health care professional and has spent the last 14 years working as a nurse.
