Y basketball camp teaches hoops, life skills

Kayley Argenbright was teaching proper shooting technique to youngsters at the Waynesboro Family YMCA Basketball Camp.

“It was neat seeing how quickly they seemed to get it,” said Argenbright, a 2012 Wilson Memorial High School graduate who will continue her basketball career next fall at Eastern Mennonite University.

Argenbright, like many of the high-school and college-age staffers at the camp, got her start at the camp as a camper. For John Spears, the director of youth sports at the Y, that is by design.

Also part of the design is the focus on helping young campers learn more than basketball.

“We try to make it fun, but also try to instill the fundamentals into everything we do – dribbling, passing, the correct way to shoot a basketball, playing defense, learning sportsmanship, team play,” Spears said.

That’s a key part of what the Y basketball camp has to offer, said Jeff Fife, the executive director at the Y and a volunteer in the Y’s basketball program since his own high-school days.

“Coach Spears does such a great job teaching sportsmanship and teamwork and values-based education. It’s not just how to dribble a basketball, but how to be excellent on the court and off it,” Fife said.

No one would have faulted the Selection Committee if Virginia, now in the Sweet 16, after an improbable three-game run in Iowa City this past weekend, hadn’t gotten an invite to the 2026 NCAA Tournament at all.
