Wrestling: Virginia downs SDSU, Grand Canyon at Gopher Duals

uva-logo-new2The Virginia wrestling team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday, going 2-1 at the Gopher Duals with wins over South Dakota State and Grand Canyon and a tight loss to No. 24 Minnesota.

Virginia (3-1) defeated South Dakota State 23-9 in the first meet of the afternoon before falling to the nationally-ranked Gophers 19-15. The Cavaliers closed out the evening with a dominating win over Grand Canyon.

George DiCamillo (Highland Heights, Ohio) at 133 pounds, Andrew Atkinson (Lynchburg, Va.) at 157 pounds and Fox Baldwin (Kissimmee, Fla.) at 174 pounds all went undefeated on the day.

“It was a long, hard road trip,” said Virginia head coach Steve Garland. “I told our guys these are the type of weekends that make you tough. These are the grow up and grow together moments we need to be the best we can be.

“We finished 3-1 on the trek and we were right there with Minnesota. They earned it, though. They beat us and deserved that match. We have to look back now and attack what we did wrong and get better. I’m thankful our administration allows us to do things like this. This arena was amazing and it was an experience our kids will never forget.”

After falling behind early to the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State, the Cavaliers moved in front with a major decision win from DiCamillo. Zach Watson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) extended the lead. Virginia would never trail again as Atkinson, Garrett Peppelman (Harrisburg, Pa.), Baldwin, Zach Nye (Enola, Pa.) and Patrick Gillen (Shelton, Conn.) all picked up wins to lead to the 23-9 victory. Atkinson’s win came over the No. 6 ranked Cody Pack at 157 pounds.

Virginia and the Gophers battled back and forth with Minnesota claiming the first match of the afternoon to take the early lead. DiCamillo put the Cavaliers in front with a fall in 4:41 as Virginia vaulted into the lead. The lead would flip twice more as Minnesota moved back in front with a win at 141 pounds, but TJ Miller (Medford, N.J.) and Atkinson both picked up decisions to move the Cavaliers back on top.

Baldwin took a decision at 174 pounds to give Virginia a five-point lead in the meet, but Minnesota would rally for the victory by claiming the final three bouts.

Virginia closed the evening with a convincing 32-3 win over Grand Canyon, winning 9-of-10 bouts, including a fall by Emilio Martinez (Platteville, Colo.) in 1:28 on the way to the Virginia victory.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Friday, Nov. 13 when Virginia will continue to wrestle on the road with a meet at No. 8 Ohio State. The meet with the Buckeyes will begin at 6:30 p.m. before Virginia will return home to host No. 18 Old Dominion at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15.
