WQSV hosts Pumptober Fest Benefit on Oct. 10

Join WQSV 106.3 on Oct. 10 at the Sunspots Pavilion stage, located in the Wharf District, in downtown Staunton, from 1-6 p.m. for the Pumptober Fest Benefit for WQSV.

WQSV 106.3 FM is a project of The Staunton Media Alliance, a nonprofit offering local radio for Staunton and parts of Waynesboro and Augusta County.

As Staunton’s first local community radio station, WQSV will have in­-studio performances and interviews with local musicians and play the music listeners want to hear. The station will offer a community arts and music calendar, local weather and  specialty shows that feature blues music and much more.

The station’s mission is to “foster community through music, broadcast education and discovery.” Area students will have the opportunity to gain hands­on experience in radio broadcasting.

The station will be staffed by volunteers and two paid staff. WQSV  encourages those with disabilities to apply.

Diana Young, the station’s co-founder, saw a need to bring the community together for a  fun, family­friendly event to help WQSV raise funds to match a grant they won through the Bright ReWired business plan competition last spring.

While staying within the “keep it local, listen local” spirit of the independent radio station’s motto, Young has arranged  everything from the music, the food and vendors to be provided by people from the  community.

“Businesses, artists, musicians and the community at large have been very supportive. Our project resonates with the community, I think many people are  aware that we have a lot to offer in terms of broadcast education, community  awareness and recognition of local musicians. We are close to reaching our immediate  fundraising goals for this year” said Young.

Sunspots Studios is one of the sponsors of the Pumptober Fest” and they will offer Blow Your Own Pumpkin Ornament ​  opportunities across the street from the  Sunspots Pavilion stage for ages 7 and up.

You can step into the glass studio and help  the glass blower create a one­of­a­kind, keepsake pumpkin ornament.

Reservations  are suggested.

You can bring a lawn chair and hear music by 23 Skiddoo, Sun­Dried Opossum,  Moon­band duo, Brian Patrick Band  and Chris Johnston. Enjoy family photos, face  painting for the kids,  soda & cider, sweets and BBQ  chicken and ribs from Carl Tyler.

The station should hit the airwaves by late winter, depending on funding. Funds are  being raised directly from fundraisers, donations and underwriting.
