virginia tennisThe No. 7 Virginia (4-2) women’s tennis team fell to No. 6 California (4-0) by a score of 4-1 on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoors hosted by the University of Wisconsin.

California claimed the doubles point and won on courts four, five and six in singles play to pick up the victory.

The match featured some of the top women’s singles players in the nation with the Cavaliers coming out on the winning side on court one. No. 4 Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 5 Maegan Manasse, while the match between No. 8 Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and No. 10 Klara Fabikova was suspended when the Bears clinched the match. Elbaba won the first set, but trailed 6-5 in the second at the time play was suspended.

Also suspended in action was the match between No. 30 Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) and Lynn Chi.

The Bears took the 1-0 lead on the Cavaliers, grabbing the doubles point with wins on court one and three.

The Virginia pairing of Collins and Kelley, ranked No. 19 in the nation, fell to the third-ranked duo of Manasse and Starr 6-2, while Virginia’s Olivarez and Wingo fell 6-3 to California’s Chi and Smith. The Bears moved out to a 2-0 lead in the match with a quick win on court six as Karla Popovic defeated Cavalier freshman Erica Susi 6-0, 6-1.

Collins’ victory put the Cavaliers on the board, but the Bears would close things out on courts four and five to pick up the match victory. Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Me.) fell 6-4, 6-4 on court four to No. 81 Olivia Hauger, while Victoria Olivarez (Virginia Beach, Va.) fell 0-6, 6-2, 3-6 to Denise Starr on court four.
