Women’s soccer: Wofford tops VMI, 1-0

vmi_logo2A 74th-minute penalty kick goal decided the contest, as the Wofford Terriers defeated the VMI Keydets, 1-0, in Southern Conference women’s soccer action on a rainy, cool Friday in Spartanburg, S.C.

VMI (4-8, 0-3 SoCon) goalkeeper Darien Dunham stopped an Emma Fletcher shot in the 74th minute, but the ball went out of bounds for a corner kick. Off that corner, Wofford (2-4-3, 1-1-1) drew a whistle because of a hand ball in the box, setting up a penalty kick. Mary Beth Bleekrode converted for her third goal of the season to account for the final margin.

After an early Wofford shot was stopped by Dunham, the Keydets saw Terrier keeper Mayson Liner stop shots by Amy Horney and Juliet Esnardo in the eighth minute. Carlyn Fralick then hit the post on a Wofford try moments later, and the match remained scoreless.

Dunham stopped the match’s next shot on goal, doing so in the 31st minute, and denied an Emma Fletcher try at 39:41 to send the match to halftime scoreless.

After the Keydets had possession early in the second half, Wofford tested Dunham in the 65th and 70th minutes before the 74th minute goal.

VMI mounted one final offensive push, but Liner had saves in the 83rd and 85th minutes to preserve the 1-0 margin.

Wofford finished the match with a 15-7 edge in shots. Dunham had eight saves to four for Liner, and each team finished the match with six corner kicks.

VMI women’s soccer will return to action Sunday in Greenville, S.C. Kickoff against the Furman Paladins is currently scheduled for 2 p.m.
