Two quick goals in the opening 10 minutes of play lifted the VMI women’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over host Richmond Wednesday night at Robins Stadium in Richmond.
The match was moved from Thursday night to Wednesday night due to the potential effects of Hurricane Florence set to hit the Carolinas this weekend. The victory adds a tally in the win column for the Keydets, now 6-0-1, to continue their best start in program history. The Spiders fall to 0-7 with the loss.
In the fifth minute of the game, Julianne Knoblett took a cross from Natalie Carpenter and put the ball into the upper left corner of the net for the quick 1-0 lead for VMI. Just two minutes, senior Blake Cashin snuck another one past the goalie for security to extend the lead and the Keydets held on defensively the rest of the way to grab the victory. The goals were the second of the year for both Knoblett and Cashin as Cashin scored in her second straight game.
Cashin led the Keydets with three shot attempts while Sierra Brewer added two. Amber Risheg, Kiley Cropper and Gabby Criscione also had shots credited during the game.
Senior goalie Ceci Keppeler earned two saves in her individual win while the defense came to the rescue on two other occasions for team saves.
The Keydets were slated to resume play Sunday at William & Mary but that match has been postponed until further notice.
