Women’s soccer: Shenandoah U. shuts out EMU

emu sportsShenandoah’s women’s soccer team took down the EMU Royals 5-0 Wednesday, completing a doubleheader sweep for the Hornets. The two teams also played in field hockey in the afternoon, with SU winning that contest 4-1.

The soccer game started at 6:15pm, 45 minute before scheduled start time, in an effort to escape the rain and lightning forecasted around most of Virginia.

EMU’s soccer women even out at 4-4-1 with the loss, including 1-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. They return home this weekend, hosting Hollins in an ODAC clash Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm.

The Royals started on the defensive against a Shenandoah team (8-2/2-0 ODAC) which has been on the rise the past couple of years. Keeper Emily Young (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) stopped a penalty kick just 3:20 into play, but the Hornets kept swarming, finally scoring in the 11th minute.

Defender Mikaela Zook (Millersburg, Ind./Northridge) cleared a ball off the line to save a goal in the 14th minute, but SU got insurance with a score in the 20th.

EMU kept the margin at 2-0 through halftime, before the Hornets stung twice in the 50th minute to blow open a 4-0 lead. The final tally came in the 84th minute.

Shenandoah had a 22-2 control in shots, including 12-1 on goal. Skylar Colvin (Madison, Va./Madison County) and Bailey McInnis (Henrico, Va./Mills E. Goodwin) each had one of the women’s shots.

Young and Leah Wenger (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) again split halves in goal, with each making three saves.
