The VMI Keydets had a 1-0 lead at halftime, but the Mercer Bears scored three unanswered goals in the second half en route to a 3-1 victory in SoCon women’s soccer action Friday night in Macon, Ga.
VMI (5-10, 2-4 SoCon) got on the board first, when a rebound was corralled by Sierra Brewer, who promptly put a shot into the back of the net for her first career goal.
The Keydets held that 1-0 lead until the 53rd minute when Maddie Clark tied the score for Mercer (7-8-1, 4-3), with a shot from the top of the box. It was Clark’s 12th score of the year, and the Bears would go on to score twice more to account for the final margin, as goals by Haleigh Svede (71st minute) and Corinne Wooten (78th minute) wrapped up the scoring.
“We played very well in the first half tonight,” said VMI head coach Chris Bergmann. “We defended very well and created several scoring chances, but credit to Mercer, as the Bears were able to take advantage of chances in the second half.”
For the match, Mercer held a 12-11 edge in shots and the teams were even in corners at five-all. Both teams posted three saves on the day.
VMI women’s soccer will wrap up its four-match road trip on Sunday, taking on The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. Opening kick is set for 1 p.m.
