vmiThe Campbell Camels scored twice in the final 11-plus minutes to break open a close match and defeat the VMI Keydets, 4-1, in non-conference women’s soccer action Friday afternoon at Patchin Field in Lexington.

After Olivia Cotton had scored for VMI (3-3) on her first shot of the season to make it 2-1, Kine Thorsvik of Campbell (4-2) played a long ball in from the left side in the 80th minute. Thorsvik was looking for a teammate, but the odd-angled cross was just over the outstretched fingers of VMI goalie Ceci Keppeler and in the back of the net. Thorsvik added an assist on a Rosie O’Neal goal less than three minutes later, which accounted for the final margin.

For the match, Campbell finished with a 17-9 edge in shot attempts and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Keppeler made four of VMI’s total five saves, while Natalya Marcove was credited with three saves for CU.

Campbell got on the board first, when Thorsvik found the foot of Christine Kindt for a score that put CU up, 1-0, in the 17th minute. An own goal in the 39th minute made it 2-0 at the break.

Cotton cut the margin to 2-1 in the 68th minute. The sophomore, who had missed the season’s first five games, stole the ball from a defender and generated a breakaway opportunity. She converted it to the lower right corner of the net to cut VMI’s deficit in half, but the Keydets could get no closer as CU put the match away later.

Sophomore Keniya Lee joined Cotton in making her 2016 debut. Cotton played 34 minutes and Lee saw time in 33.

VMI women’s soccer will return to action Sunday, when the Keydets play host to Mount St. Mary’s at 1 p.m.
