Women’s soccer: EMU surges past Hollins

emu sportsThe EMU soccer women got back on the winning track Saturday afternoon, rolling over Hollins 6-0 in an ODAC shutout. Freshman Laura Rittenhouse (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) notched her second hat trick of the season as the Royals improve to 5-4-1.

Just three games into the ODAC schedule, the Royals are 2-1 and in a three-way tie for third place in the league standings.

The women get a tougher test next Wednesday, hosting Randolph-Macon at 7:00pm. The Yellow Jackets were picked No. 7 in the ODAC Preseason Poll.

Eastern Mennonite dominated play from the opening touch against a short-benched Hollins squad. Junior Sierra Martin(Glenwood Springs, Colo./Glenwood Springs) finally got the women on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute, connecting on her first goal of the season. Rittenhouse followed suit four minutes later, firing in a long shot with an assist from Amanda Williams(Millsboro, Del./Delmarva, Christian).

The 2-0 lead remained until the final 20 minutes of the contest. In the 71st minute, Logann Braun (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) put a shot off the post. Rittenhouse tipped in the rebound for her second of the day, giving an assist to Braun. With another two minutes, the forward had her hat trick, punching in a shot inside the box to make it 4-0.

In the 82nd, Sara Shenk Moreno (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) was the benefactor of a cross from Williams to push the lead to 5-0. Williams finally got her own score with just 49 seconds left, lacing in a shot through a crowded box. For the junior, it was her first goal of the season after assisting on three others.

EMU had a 34-0 shutout in shot attempts, putting 20 on goal.
