The 4-seed Virginia women’s lacrosse team (9-9) fell 11-10 to 5-seed Notre Dame (10-8) in the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference quarterfinals on Thursday at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Virginia had a 3-1 advantage after three consecutive goals early, then stretched its lead to 6-3 with another run in the first half. UVA closed out the first half on a 3-0 run to lead 9-4 at the break. Notre Dame came back to out-score the Cavaliers 7-1 in the second half to take the win 11-10.
Senior Kasey Behr (Northport, N.Y.) led the Cavaliers with four goals. Junior Maggie Jackson (Alexandria, Va.) had three assists and one goal, sophomore Sammy Mueller (Pelham, N.Y.) and junior Avery Shoemaker (Wyndmoor, Pa.) had two goals while freshman Chloe Jones (Slingerlands, N.Y.) scored one goal. Andie Aldave and Savannah Buchanan led Notre Dame with three goals each.
Virginia led the game in shots (27-21) and ground balls (21-19). The Irish had the advantage in draw controls (13-10) and saves (11-5).
Notre Dame scored first but Virginia tied it up two minutes later when Jackson found Mueller for a goal at 26:15. Jackson then dodged two defenders and scored to give UVA the 2-1 lead at 21:17. Jackson then found Behr, who ripped her first goal of the day as the Cavaliers took a 3-1 advantage. Notre Dame scored to cut it to 3-2.
Virginia responded with a 3-0 run to take a 6-2 lead. Jones started the scoring with a free position. Just a minute later Behr converted on a free position opportunity. Neither team scored for almost six minutes until Mueller capped off the 3-0 run with a free position goal at 11:09. Notre Dame then scored back-to-back goals to cut it to 6-4.
The Cavaliers closed out the half on a 3-0 run. Shoemaker ran past the ND defense to score at the 7:30 mark. Behr reached a hat trick after Jackson found her driving in front of the net to score. Behr then notched her fourth goal of the game at 4:29. UVA took the 9-4 lead into halftime, holding Notre Dame scoreless for the final 9:43 of the first half.
Notre Dame opened the second half with four consecutive goals to cut the game to 9-8. UVA halted the run and ended its scoreless drought with a goal by Shoemaker on the assist from Mueller at the 15:18 mark in the second half. The Irish scored three goals over the final 15 minutes of the game for the comeback win.
