The Virginia women’s basketball team (13-7, 3-3 ACC) hosts Pittsburgh (8-11, 0-6 ACC) on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.

Activities involving National Girls and Women’s in Sports Day that were scheduled to take place prior to the game on Sunday (Jan. 24) have been cancelled due to inclement weather. The cancelled activities included a pregame youth sports festival and a pregame reception to honor the 1991 NCAA champion Virginia women’s lacrosse team. The team will be honored at the home women’s lacrosse game against North Carolina on March 12. Make up dates are being considered for the youth sports festival at another home women’s basketball game this season. There will also be a youth sports festival held prior to the UVA-UNC women’s lacrosse game onMarch 12.
Virginia is coming off a 70-48 loss at No. 14 Florida State on Thursday (Jan. 21) night. After averaging 46.3 points in three games between Jan. 7 and 14 (against Notre Dame, Wake Forest and Louisville), UVA had seemingly gotten out of the scoring doldrums by putting up 78 points in the victory at Georgia Tech last Sunday (Jan. 17) before logging their third game of scoring fewer than 50 points in the last five contests.
Junior Breyana Mason (Woodbridge, Va.), however, was not one of the players who struggled with scoring at Florida State. Mason scored a team-high 15 points, the first time this season and just the fourth time in her career she has tallied the highest point total for the Cavaliers in a game. Mason, who is averaging 9.8 points per game this season, has been putting up 13.3 points per game in ACC contests.
Mason was 7-of-13 shooting at Florida State. Including a 10-of-14 game at Georgia Tech and 5-of-8 against Louisville, Mason is shooting 62.8 percent in the last three games. In ACC contests, Mason is hitting 50.7 percent of her shots, which ranks 10th in the conference and is second among ACC guards.
Sophomore Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va.) snapped a streak of 12-straight games scoring in double digits at Florida State, scoring eight points. Venson is averaging 15.2 points per game, ranking sixth in the ACC.
Virginia travel to NC State to take on the Wolfpack on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Broughton High School in Raleigh, N.C. The Cavaliers will be back at home on Sunday, Feb. 7, hosting Virginia Tech at 2 p.m.
