Women’s basketball: UVA wins at Old Dominion, 73-67

UVA basketballThe UVA women’s basketball team (1-2, 0-0 ACC) picked up a 73-67 victory at Old Dominion (3-1, 0-0 C-USA) on Sunday (Nov. 17) at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk.

The Cavaliers held a 35-31 advantage at halftime and used a 12-1 run in the third quarter to build up a 51-43 lead, but Old Dominion refused to go away. The Monarchs hit the first shot of the fourth quarter, narrowing the deficit to 56-52 with 9:39 remaining, but then both teams had their offenses stall.

ODU missed its next six field goal attempts as well as a pair of free throws while the Cavaliers missed six-straight shots.

Willoughby ended UVA’s scoring drought by hitting a pair of free throws with six minutes remaining in the game. Old Dominion narrowed the gap to three points, 62-59, after Maggie Robinson hit a three-pointer, followed by a free throw from Victoria Morris with 2:52 remaining, but the Cavaliers answered with field goals from senior Mone Jones (Durham, N.C), junior Dominque Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.), Aiyotan and another from Jones on its next four possessions to secure the win.
