Women’s Basketball: UVA downs Coppin State, 55-41

UVA women’s basketballThe UVA women’s basketball team (3-5) defeated Coppin State (0-6) 55-41 on Sunday (Dec. 2) at John Paul Jones Arena.

Junior guard Dominique Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored 14 points to lead the Cavaliers. Junior guard Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds. Virginia shot 40.4 percent (21-of-52) while holding Coppin State to 19.7 percent shooting (14-of-71). UVA held a 50-41 edge in rebounding.

The Cavaliers closed the first half on a 7-0 run to go into the break with a 28-16 advantage. They then built up an 18-point lead in the second half, but Coppin State chipped away, using an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter to pull to within 10, 51-41, with 2:33 remaining. Sophomore guard Khyasia Caldwell (Pocono Summit, Pa.) halted the run, scoring a fastbreak layup with 1:37 remaining. Toussaint added a pair of free throws in the final 30-seconds to secure the 14-point victory.

This was the first of three games this week for the Cavaliers. UVA will host American on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m., and Radford on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m., before heading into an 11-day break for final exams

The game against Radford on Saturday, Dec. 8 is the Cavaliers’ last home game before Christmas. The next time UVA will be at JPJ will be on Sunday, Dec. 30 to host Charlotte in the final non-conference game of the season
