A Newport News woman has been arrested after she was caught trying to smuggle drugs valued at $75,000 into Haynesville Correctional Center.

Kristyn Nicole Mazzariello, a family member of an inmate, has been charged with a felony drug charge in Richmond County General District Court.

Mazzariello had three packages concealed on her body containing 90 Buprenorphine and Naloxone strips and seven synthetic marijuana papers, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections.

On Nov. 22, Mazzariello arrived at Haynesville for a scheduled inmate graduation.

Facility investigators and special agents stopped and spoke to Mazzariello and later asked her to submit to a drug and contraband scan from a VADOC K-9. The K-9 alerted agents to drugs on her body and inside her vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing.
