A winter weather advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday with mixed precipitation including snow and freezing rain possible in central, northwest and western Virginia.

Flooding may also occur this weekend in portions of western Virginia, including Augusta County.

The National Weather Service has issued the winter weather advisory primarily for higher elevations in the warned area with the potential for ice accumulation. Elevated surfaces, including bridges and overpasses, may lead to slippery road conditions.

This is the third storm in the region this week. Precipitation may start as freezing rain in the higher elevations with primarily rain in the valleys. Little to no ice accumulation is expected below 1,000 feet; a glaze is possible above 1,000 feet with the most significant ice above 2,000 feet.

Afton Mountain is nearly 1,400 feet in elevation.

Flood watch through Sunday night

A flood watch was issued from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon, starting at 6 p.m. on Feb. 15 and running for approximately 24 hours.

One to two inches of rain is possible in the region. Flooding is possible due to the combination of excessive rainfall and melting snow.

Water was already a factor yesterday on the Patton Farm bridge in Stuarts Draft, according to a social media page that monitors unsafe conditions on the bridge. The bridge was closed last night after a water rescue involving a van in high water.

Patton Farm, Calf Mountain and Crimora Mine roads are often the first areas in Augusta County to face high water and road closures.

According to the watch, flooding may occur in rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Those in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action.

AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Thomas Kines told AFP on Sunday that any flooding concerns would likely be in the southern part of the state.
