Waynesboro YMCA, Waynesboro Public Schools offering Summer Enrichment Camp

The Waynesboro Family YMCA and Waynesboro Public Schools have partnered to coordinate a Summer Enrichment Camp for teacher-referred youths from Wenonah Elementary School and William Perry Elementary School.

The camp will provide a comprehensive thematic-based enrichment program with hands on learning activities focused on literacy, science, mathematics as well as arts and crafts, games, sports and other physical activities, group activities (small and large) and teambuilding as it relates to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

The pilot camp will run at William Perry at no costs to the participants.  The group will be split into rising first- and second-graders and rising third- to fifth-graders.

The camp will be offered June 4-28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.  Breakfast, lunch, and a healthy afternoon snack will be served, and transportation will be provided to those that need it.

In this unique partnership, Waynesboro Public Schools will provide curriculum and instruction during the morning, and Waynesboro YMCA staff will reinforce the morning themed activities with additional hands on learning experiences in addition to leadership development, sports, and fitness programming in the afternoon.

The fourth week of the camp will be led by Blue Ridge Children’s Museum with an exciting array of activities for the participants.

“This is one of the most exciting partnerships I’ve been involved in,” said Jeff Fife, executive director of the Waynesboro YMCA. “Summertime can be one most challenging for families, and kids need additional support to maintain their academics. This experience also gives them the chance to be a kid … run, play, go outside, and try new things.”

Dr. Jeff Cassell, superintendent of Waynesboro Public Schools, is also enthusiastic about the joint venture.

“Waynesboro Public Schools is excited to expand summer opportunities for youth in partnership with the Y, particularly with the blend of academic, nutrition, and recreation in a camp experience,” Cassell said.
