Waynesboro: Why is the center-left majority allowing the MAGAs to run the city?

All that work that we did to put an ever-so-slightly left-of-center majority on the Waynesboro City Council over the past two election cycles, and the reward for us is: they’re still letting the MAGA do-nothings run the city.

The 3-2 whatever-they-are-now majority is firmly siding with the two MAGAs to cap the local contribution to our schools budget at a level that would make it hard for the school system to keep up with inflation, much less address issues with teacher pay, which is an issue everywhere, but here, means we are constantly churning teachers, either losing them to other school systems, or to other professions.

But, hey, our City Council sure does feel good about being having of the bottom two or three city property tax rates in the state, which is the real reason we can’t pay our public works and emergency services employees a living wage, not the money that we commit to public education.

The approach that has been in place in our city for the past 20 years, dating back to the insane decision by a previous City Council to fill an unexpired term with the Master of Do-Nothing, a guy named Frank Lucente, who thinks everything is as simple as selling hot dogs, which is how he made whatever small fortune he made, is, just keep this thing going, this thing being the City of Waynesboro, as long as we can, until the candle burns out, basically.

We’re getting close.

Successive city governments have been led by elected officials who not only don’t have any vision for the future, they can’t imagine there is a future, which is why whatever gets done here to keep the lights on is done by folks outside of city government, with the successes to that end being in spite of city government.

Now, to be fair to Jim Wood, of Pete Buttplug fame, and Jeremy Sloat, he who jumps when Jim Wood tells him to jump, without asking how high, they ran for City Council telling you directly that they were going to do nothing, and to their credit, they’ve lived up to – or down to – their promises.

Kenny Lee, though, Terry Short, Lori Jean Akanbi, they ran as either moderates or as center-left.

As breaths of fresh air, until they got in office.

Why they’re letting the MAGAs run the city is a fair question.

Probably a good time to remind them that we put them where they are, and we can take them out, starting with Kenny Lee, whose seat on the City Council is up for re-election in November.

Waynesboro isn’t MAGA-red anymore; if those three want to continue to stand in the way of getting things done, we can find some new folks who will shove their asses out of the way, so that we can get back to Moving Waynesboro Forward.
