Joseph Estrada cleared the bases with a three-run fifth-inning triple, and it was just in the nick of time for the Waynesboro Generals.
The game at Kate Collins Field with the visiting Woodstock River Bandits was sent into a weather delay after the Estrada rip, and the contest was called after a rain delay, giving the Generals a 3-0 win.
The fifth-inning rally got going with two out and none out. Clayton Taylor was hit by a pitch by Woodstock starter Michael Scimanico (3-2, 2.27 ERA) to keep the inning alive. Kevin Phillips and Jonathan Camp each walked on 3-2 pitches, ending the night for Scimanico, who threw 116 pitches on the evening.
Hunter Morgan came in to relieve, and Estrada didn’t waste any time, with the clouds gathering as Morgan warmed up. Estrada sent an 0-1 pitch down the line in right for the three-bagger.
A clap of thunder and streak of lightning greeted Estrada at third, sending the teams and fans toward the exits for a mandatory weather delay. A heavy rainstorm rendered the field unplayable, ending the night with the game considered official at the five-inning mark.
Waynesboro starter Brett Sasse (2-1, 1.80 ERA) got the win, giving up five hits and a walk in five innings of work, striking out two, in recording his second shutout of the season.
