Waynesboro Generals blast Covington Lumberjacks, 10-3, in 2015 season opener

generals-new logo2The two-time defending Valley League champion Waynesboro Generals rolled to a 10-3 season-opening win over the Covington Lumberjacks Saturday night.

The Generals struck early on a two-run homer in the top of the first by Jeremy Taylor (East Tennessee State, junior).

Waynesboro added two in the second on an RBI groundout by Imani Willis (Austin Peay, freshman) and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Gridley (Mississippi State, freshman).

A Gridley two-RBI double jumpstarted a three-run fourth that also included an RBI single by Joseph Estrada (Alabama State, freshman).

The Generals put the game away with a three-run eighth that featured RBI groundouts by Jeremy Taylor and Clayton Taylor sandwiched around an RBI single by Estrada.

Gridley and Estrada each had three hits to pace Waynesboro’s 14-hit attack.

Kevin Fagan (Stetson, junior) started and pitched four innings, giving up a run on four hits, striking out five.

Matt Horkey (UNC-Charlotte, freshman) gave Waynesboro four innings out of the pen, giving up a run on five hits, striking out one and walking one.
