Two drivers were involved in a road-rage incident on Interstate 64 in Waynesboro Wednesday resulting in an exchange of gunfire in the travel lane.

Virginia State Police is looking to piece together exactly what happened and is looking for information identifying the driver of a white truck involved in the incident.

The road-rage shooting occurred at approximately 5:03 p.m. yesterday on I-64 eastbound near exit 96.

According to police, a black Genesis sedan travelling eastbound cut off a white truck, possibly identified a Toyota with large tires.

The two vehicles then stopped in the travel lane, and the driver of the truck allegedly fired at the driver of the black sedan, who then returned fire.

The truck then drove away from the scene using exit 96, according to VSP. It is unknown if the driver of the truck was injured.

The driver of the sedan, who was not injured, remained on scene and has cooperated with the investigation.

VSP is looking to identify the driver of the white truck who is described as:

  • White male
  • early to mid-30s
  • light brown or reddish hair
  • distinct jaw line

Any charges are pending consultation with the Waynesboro Commonwealth’s Attorney.
