Washington Nationals blast Reds in opener, 13-4

washington nationalsDanny Espinosa hit two homers, including a third-inning grand slam, to power the Washington Nationals to a 13-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday.

The Nats (48-32) have won five straight.

Espinosa (.235/.338/.449, 15 HR, 41 RBI) also hit a three-run homer in the fourth. Ryan Zimmerman (.227/.287/.412, 11 HR, 36 RBI) hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first that gave Washington an early 4-1 lead.

The Espinosa grand slam pushed the lead to 8-1, and his three-run shot in the fourth made it 13-1.

All of this was in support of Gio Gonzalez (4-7, 4.81 ERA, 1.39 WHIP), who gave up four runs on six hits in six innings of work, striking out nine and walking four.
