Virginia updates crop forecasts for 2014 season

virginia-newThe Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced today that, based on September 1 conditions, Virginia’s corn crop is forecast at 52.9 million bushels, down five percent from last year. Average yield is forecast at 143 bushels per acre, down 11 bushels from last year.  Acreage of corn harvested for grain is estimated at 370,000, up 10,000 acres from last year. This is according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Soybean production in Virginia is forecast at 24.2 million bushels, up eight percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 590,000 acres, is unchanged from 2013. Yield is forecast at 41 bushels per acre, up three bushels from last year.

Cotton yield is forecast at 1,060 pounds per acre, up 119 pounds from last year’s 941 pounds per acre. If realized, production would be 190,000 bales, up 26 percent from last year. Producers expect to harvest 86,000 acres in 2014, up 12 percent from last year.

Peanut yield is forecast at 4,300 pounds per acre, up 300 pounds from last year. If realized, this will be the highest yield on record. Production is forecast at 81.7 million pounds, up 28 percent from 2013’s production.

Flue-cured tobacco yield is forecast at 2,500 pounds per acre, up 300 pounds from 2013. Production is forecast at 55.0 million pounds from 22,000 acres. Burley tobacco yields are expected to average 2,150 pounds, up 250 pounds from last year. Production is expected to total 5.38 million pounds, up 18 percent from 2013. Fire-cured tobacco yields are expected to average 2,250 pounds per acre, up 100 pounds from 2013. Production is forecast at 743,000 pounds, down one percent from 2013.
