Virginia Tech rallies, defeats Georgia Tech, 23-21

AFP

vatechVirginia Tech rallied from an early 14-0 deficit and a third-quarter pick six to defeat a sloppy Georgia Tech team, 23-21, on Thursday night in Atlanta.

The Hokies (5-5, 3-3 ACC) still need a win in their final two games – at home Nov. 21 vs. #17 North Carolina, and at Virginia on Nov. 28 – to become bowl-eligible for a 23rd straight season.

The Yellow Jackets (3-7, 1-6 ACC) will be shut out of the bowl season after entering the 2015 campaign as the preseason favorite in the Coastal Division.

Georgia Tech jumped out to a two-touchdown lead and seemed to be in control, but Virginia Tech got on the board at the 5:56 mark of the second quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run by Travon McMillian, then tied it with 35 seconds left in the half on a 17-yard TD pass from Michael Brewer to Isaiah Ford.

Brewer was intercepted on the first possession of the third quarter by Georgia Tech freshman linebacker Brant Mitchell, who returned the pick 32 yards to the house to put the Jackets back on top.

The Hokies edged closer on a 29-yard field goal by Joey Slye with 8:42 to go in the third, then took the lead with 6:58 to go in the game on a 4-yard run by McMillian, who ran for 135 yards on 24 carries.

Georgia Tech lost three fumbles in the second half, and came up short on two drives in the final six minutes.

Brewer was 15-of-29 passing for 178 yards. Virginia Tech outgained Georgia Tech 344-258, holding the Jackets to 128 yards over the last three quarters.

Marcus Allen ran 16 times for 75 yards for Georgia Tech, which gained just 161 yards on 47 attempts on the ground.

Everything you wanted to know about a heat dome, but were afraid to ask

A “heat dome” is worse than a “heat wave,” I’m learning, because “heat dome” refers to hot weather that can last a week or more, while a “heat wave” can be over in as few as three days.
