Virginia soybean acreage down, corn up from 2015

virginiaThe Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced today that soybeans planted in Virginia were estimated at 610,000 acres, down 20,000 acres from 2015. Acres harvested for grain, at 600,000 acres, were 20,000 acres below acres a year ago.

The information was gathered by the Virginia Field Office of the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Acreage planted to corn in Virginia was estimated at 490,000 acres, up 40,000 acres from 2015. Acres harvested for grain was estimated at 340,000 acres, up 40,000 acres from last year.

Upland cotton acreage in Virginia was estimated at 80,000, down 5,000 acres from 2015.

Farmers in Virginia intend to set an estimated 1,200 acres of burley tobacco for harvest. This is 100 acres below the 2015 level. Dark fire-cured tobacco acreage set was estimated at 250 acres, unchanged from the previous year. Flue-cured tobacco acreage was estimated at 21,000 acres, down 500 from a year ago.

Peanut growers in the Commonwealth planted 20,000 acres, up 1,000 acres from 2015. Producers expect to harvest 20,000 acres of peanuts this year, also up 1,000 acres from 2015.

Barley seeded acreage is estimated at 35,000 acres, down 24 percent from last year. Barley producers anticipate harvesting 18,000 acres for grain, 2,000 above last year.

Winter wheat seeded acreage in Virginia was estimated at 220,000 acres, 40,000 acres below the previous year. Acreage harvested for grain was estimated at 175,000 acres, 35,000 acres below 2015.

Alfalfa hay acreage in Virginia was estimated at 75,000 acres, unchanged from the 2015 crop. All other hay was estimated at 1.10 million acres, unchanged from a year ago.
