virginia soccer thomsenVirginia senior defender Scott Thomsen (Brick, N.J.) signed a Homegrown contract with Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls on Wednesday (Dec. 23). Thomsen’s former UVA teammate Derrick Etienne also signed a homegrown deal with the Red Bulls on Monday.

Thomsen is the third Virginia player to ink a homegrown deal in the last three seasons. His former teammate Jordan Allen signed with Real Salt Lake following UVA’s 2013 season.

Thomsen played 66 career matches for Virginia, including 56 starts as a midfielder and defender, and he was a key figure in UVA’s run to the 2014 NCAA Championship. He finished his career with three goals and 18 assists and led the team in assists in his freshman and junior seasons. He battled through an injury-plagued senior season and played in just five games.

Thomsen was a standout in the classroom as well and finished the requirements for his bachelor’s degree in foreign affairs in early December. He was one of 30 candidates for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award for men’s soccer. Thomsen is a two-time ACC All-Academic Men’s Soccer Team honoree and a three-time recipient of ACC Academic Honor Roll honors.

Thomsen is a product of the Red Bulls academy program and spent summers with the Red Bulls U-23s, winning the NPSL title in 2014 and scoring three goals and three assists in 14 appearances in 2015. Prior to Virginia, he was a member of the Red Bulls U-18 team, and spent time with the U.S. Under-18 Team as well.

Virginia finished the 2015 season with a 10-5-3 record, including a 4-2-2 mark and second-place finish in the ACC Coastal Division. The Cavaliers advanced to the NCAA tournament for the 35th-consecutive season, reaching the second round.
