Virginia’s Mike Papi, Kyle Crockett and Joe McCarthy captured three of the top honors on the 2013 University Division All-State Baseball team chosen by the Virginia College Sports Information Directors (VaSID) and announced today, while William & Mary’s Jamie Pinzino is named the Coach of the Year. Papi was selected as the Player of the Year, Crockett was the Pitcher of the Year and McCarthy was voted Rookie of the Year.
In his first season as head coach of the Tribe, Pinzino was named the CAA’s Co-Coach of the Year as he led the team to a school record 39 wins, which included the Tribe’s first-ever NCAA Tournament wins. It was the Green and Gold’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2001 and the first-ever with an NCAA at-large berth.
Papi, a sophomore, was named a First-Team All-American this year by the ABCA and Baseball America and also was a First-Team All-ACC selection. He hit an ACC-best .381 this season, becoming UVa’s first ACC batting champion since Glenn Harris in 1981. He hit seven home runs, 15 doubles and three triples, while driving in 57 runs and scoring 57 times.
Crockett, a junior, was an NCBWA Third-Team All-America and First-Team All-ACC selection in 2013. He posted a 4-1 record with a 1.70 ERA and 12 saves this season. In 58.1 innings, he allowed just 42 hits and seven walks while striking out 71. The Cleveland Indians selected him in the fourth round of the MLB Draft.
McCarthy adds this honor to his ACC Freshman of the Year award. He finished third on the team with a .336 batting average and ranked second with a .469 on base percentage. He had four home runs and drove in 51 runs. He was a Second-Team All-ACC honoree and was named a Freshman All-American by Louisville Slugger and the NCBWA.
Only five players named to the 2012 University Division All-State Baseball team are repeat selections. Seniors Jeff Kemp of Radford and Jacob Mayers of Richmond and sophomores Mark Zagunis of Virginia Tech, who was the 2012 Rookie of the Year, and Michael Katz of William & Mary all repeat as first teamers. The Hokies’ Tyler Horan makes the first team after being named second team last year.
Virginia led the way with eight total players on the all-state team, while Virginia Tech had the most first team members with five, which ties for the second-most ever from one school – Virginia, 2009, six. Twelve of the state’s 13 Division I baseball programs had at least one representative, with Tech having six, W&M four, James Madison three, and Liberty two. With one each was Longwood, Norfolk State, Old Dominion, Radford, Richmond, VCU and VMI. The entire team appears on the next page.

# – First time one school has swept all three player awards. In 2006, Virginia had pitcher, rookie and coach, which was the only other time one school had three of the four major honors (which started in 2006 – before it was just player and coach)
