Virginia Organizing, Augusta Coalition for Peace and Justice to screen ‘Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot’

virginia-organizing new2Virginia Organizing and the Augusta Coalition for Peace and Justice will host a screening of “Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot” and a community discussion about the film on Sunday from 2-4:30 p.m. on the 2nd floor of the Staunton Public Library. Local Youth Leader and Conflict Resolution Trainer Jodie Geddes will moderate the community discussion.

“The Augusta Coalition for Peace and Justice and Virginia Organizing are pleased to bring this film to the Staunton community so we can understand the sacrifices that were made for all people to have a right to vote,” said Elizabeth La Grua of Staunton. “Non-violent grassroots organizing was powerful enough to earn millions their legal right to vote and it is powerful enough to change our communities today.”

According to the website, Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot “is the true story of forgotten heroes in the fight for voting rights—the courageous students and teachers of Selma, Alabama, who stood up against injustice despite facing intimidation, arrests, and violence. By organizing and marching bravely, these change-makers achieved one of the most significant victories of the civil rights era.”
