Virginia baseball recruiting class ranked 14th nationally by Baseball America

uva logoVirginia’s 2013-14 recruiting class has been ranked 14th nationally by Baseball America, as the publication announced its annual recruiting rankings Tuesday (Oct. 22).

Baseball America’s recruiting class rankings are based on many conversations with college coaches and pro scouts across the country. Along with extensive research, Baseball America looks at its individual player rankings among the BA 500 for the 2013 draft. The rankings do not consider transfers from four-year schools, except graduate transfers who are immediately eligible.

Virginia’s incoming freshman class is comprised of nine student-athletes, including a catcher, two infielders, one outfielder and five pitchers (one left-handed). Three were selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft – infielder Daniel Pinero (Toronto, Ontario) was a 20th-round selection by the Houston Astros, Connor Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) was a 21st-round pick of the San Diego Padres and Matt Thaiss (Jackson, N.J.) was a 32nd-round selection for the Boston Red Sox.

The highly-acclaimed class also features Tyler Allen (Powhatan, Va.), Alec Bettinger (Woodbridge, Va.), Adam Bleday (Titusville, Pa.), Tony Butler (Sun Prairie, Wis.), Ben Carraway (Canton, Ga.) and Jack Roberts (Richmond, Va.).

Virginia concluded its fall season on Monday (Oct. 21). The Cavaliers open their 2014 season on Feb. 14.
