A Virginia State Police trooper helped rescue a Maryland man from a burning Tesla on Friday during a winter storm in Caroline County.

Sgt. S. Page was driving along Interstate 95 northbound when he stopped to check on a driver at the 111 mile marker. It quickly caught fire, and the doors were locked and would not open.

The trooper broke the window of the vehicle, cut the airbag, and with the help of other good Samaritans, pulled the man to safety.

The driver, Foday Kanu, 34, of Upper Marlboro, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

According to VSP, the crash occurred at 7 a.m. when Kanu went off the left side of the road and struck a tree. Kanu was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Weather conditions are a possible cause of the accident, according to VSP.

The crash remains under investigation.
