VDOT: Traffic alerts in Staunton District, Culpeper District for Sept. 23-27

VDOT has updated its schedules for road construction and maintenance in the Staunton District and Culpeper District for the week of Sept. 23-27.

Obtain traffic alerts and traveler information by dialing 511 or visiting 511Virginia.org. For other assistance, call the VDOT Customer Service Center, available 24 hours-a-day, seven days a week.

Citizens can dial 1-800-FOR- ROAD (1-800-367-7623) from anywhere in the state to report road hazards, ask transportation questions, or get information related to Virginia’s roads.

Staunton District


Alleghany County

Interstate 64

  • *NEW* Mile marker 0 to 40, eastbound – Left or right shoulder closures at various locations for debris removal, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.
  • *NEW* Mile marker 7 to 6, westbound – Left lane closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday.

  • Mile marker 219 to 224, northbound and southbound – Overnight right lane and shoulder closures including along Exit 221 off-ramp for resurfacing operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through Thursday.
  • Mile marker 220 to 222, northbound and southbound – Shoulders closed 24/7. Overnight single-lane closures as needed. Traffic restrictions are for bridge replacement and roadway construction as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. Expected completion summer 2025.
  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Nighttime northbound left lane closures for moving equipment, 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday through Friday nights. Route 285 (Tinkling Spring Road) – Flagger and pilot-truck traffic control between Route 1315 (Wilson Lane) and Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Thursday night.

Route 285 (Tinkling Spring Road) – Northbound right shoulder closure between Foursquare Lane and Route 1315 (Wilson Lane) for commercial entrance construction, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Friday.

Route 608 (Long Meadow Road) – Flagger and pilot-truck traffic control between Route 797 (Miller Road) and Route 641 (Fishersville Road) for paving. Potential for 24-hour operations through October 11.

Route 610 (Howardsville Turnpike) – Temporary road closures between Route 633 (Patton Farm Road) and Route 855 (Mill Creek Lane) for overhead utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Thursday.

Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between South Oak Lane and Chinquapin Drive for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor, through May 2025.

Route 635 (Barterbrook Road) – Closed between I-81 frontage roads (FR-217 and FR-218) for bridge replacement as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Follow posted detour. Expected completion summer 2025.

Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) – Northbound shoulder closures between Route 834 (Hickory Hill Road) and Route 285 (Tinkling Spring Road) for commercial entrance construction, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Friday.

Route 644 (Frontier Drive) – Flagger and pilot-truck traffic control between Route 11 (Lee-Jackson Highway) and Staunton city limits for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nights through Thursday.

Route 664 (Mount Torrey Road) – Occasional flagger traffic control between Route 624 (Lyndhurst Road) and Route 610 (Howardsville Turnpike) for utility work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through September 30.

Route 664 (Lyndhurst Road, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between Miami Avenue and Purdue Street for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor, through June 2025.

Interstate 81

  • Mile marker 237 to 264, northbound and southbound – Daytime right shoulder closures and overnight (8 p.m. to 7 a.m.) left lane closures for mowing and litter pickup through Monday.
  • Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures as needed, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through December 2026. Overnight slow-roll closures as needed, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Expect delays. 24/7 shoulder closures. Traffic restrictions are related to Route 33 bridge and interchange project.
  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 244 to 248, northbound and southbound – Overnight lane closures or daytime shoulder closures including along Exit 245 off-ramps for rock and soil testing, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. for nighttime work and 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for daytime work. Estimated completion October 10.

Route 11 (North Valley Pike/Lee Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Northwood Lane and Route 765 (Gravels Road) for curb and gutter installation, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through November 1.

Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger and pilot-truck traffic control between Dry Run Road and Switzer Lake Road for road widening project, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through December.

Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) –Overnight lane closures eastbound and westbound between Vine Street/Hawkins Street and Terri Drive due to bridge work, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. nights through January 2026. Single-lane traffic on bridge over railway just west of I-81. Shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 25 miles an hour with automated speed enforcement. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement.

*NEW* Route 280 (Stone Spring Road) – Westbound right lane closures as needed near bridge over I-81 for moving equipment related to rock and soil testing, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*NEW* Route 710 (Reservoir Street, Harrisonburg) – Southbound left lane closures as needed between Foley Road and Ridgeville Lane for rock and soil testing, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. September 23 – October 4.

Warren County

Interstate 66

  • Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder closures at various locations including along Exit 6 off-ramp for utility work, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. through September 30.
  • Mile marker 7 to 15, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures for utility work, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through September 30.
  • Mile marker 14 to 15, eastbound – Right shoulder closures for utility work, with daytime and nighttime work hours possible. Estimated completion Friday.

Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) – Southbound right shoulder closures of on-ramp to westbound I-66 for utility work, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through September 30.

Route 658 (Rockland Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) and Route 705 (Fishnet Boulevard) for construction of bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway. Follow posted detour. Estimated completion December 2025.

Culpeper District


Albemarle County 

(NEW) Tree trimming – Expect lane and shoulder closures in the following areas:

  • Interstate 64, between mile marker 107 and mile marker 124 in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Interstate 64, between mile marker 112 and mile marker 115 in the westbound lanes, daily, 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

(NEW) Roadway sweeping – Expect mobile, alternating lane closures, 3:30 a.m. to 6 a.m. in the following areas:

  • U.S. 250 (Richmond Road), between the Charlottesville city line and Route 179 (Hansens Mountain Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Monday.
  • Route 20 (Stony Point Road), between U.S. 250 (Richmond Road) and Route 1421 (Elk Drive) in the northbound and southbound lanes, Tuesday.
  • Route 631 (Rio Road East), between U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) and the Charlottesville city line in the northbound and southbound lanes, Friday.

(NEW) Pipe repairs/installation – Expect lane and shoulder closures in the following areas:

  • U.S. 29 (Monacan Trail), alternating lane closures between Route 697 (Sutherland Road) and Route 633 (Heards Mountain Road) in the northbound and southbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Route 697 (Sutherland Road), road closed between U.S. 29 (Monacan Trail) and Hope Lane, 8 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday.

(UPDATE) Equipment installation – Expect intermittent lane and shoulder closures, Monday through Thursday, 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. in the following areas:

  • Interstate 64 eastbound between mile marker 102 and mile marker 105
  • Interstate 64 westbound between mile marker 107 and mile marker 102

Bridge Superstructure repairs/replacement – Expect lane and shoulder closures in the following areas:

  • Route 20 (Scottsville Road), Expect temporary traffic signal with a traffic pattern shift at Route 708 (Red Hill Road). Route 708 is narrowed to one lane for construction on the bridge over the North Fork Hardware River. Please expect delays during high volume times of the day. Project completion date, Dec. 4, 2024.
  • Route 824 (Patterson Mill Lane), Road closed to through traffic between U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) and Route 688 (Midway Road). Expected completion, Oct. 25, 2024.

(NEW) Signal installations – Expect shoulder closures in the following areas:

  • U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike), right shoulder closures between Route 9886 (Savannah Court) and Route 751 (Brownsville Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Thursday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Route 20 (Scottsville Road), both shoulders at Route 712 (Coles Rolling Road) in the northbound and southbound lanes, daily, 7 a.m. to 5 a.m.

(UPDATE) Utility work under VDOT permit – Expect lane and shoulder closures in the following areas:

  • U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike), alternating lane closures between Route 240 (Crozet Avenue) and Route 797 (Hillsboro Lane) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
