VDOT: Snow affecting travel in Shenandoah Valley

Winter weather is causing slick spots on many roads in the Shenandoah Valley, especially in northern areas where snowfall began Sunday night. Snow is expected to continue for much of the day on Monday, and the Virginia Department of Transportation advises drivers to be alert for changing conditions.

VDOT crews will continue working 12-hour shifts throughout the 11 counties of the Staunton District, plowing and treating roads as needed for the duration of the winter storm.

Here are the road conditions as of 11:30 a.m. Monday:

• Interstate 64 – Minor conditions in Augusta County. Clear conditions in Alleghany and Rockbridge counties.
• Interstate 66 – Clear conditions in Warren County.
• Interstate 81 – Minor conditions in Augusta County. Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Frederick counties.
• Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Highland, Rockingham, Page and Shenandoah counties. Minor conditions in Bath, Augusta, Frederick and Warren counties. Clear conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Clarke counties.
• Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Highland, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah and Frederick counties. Minor conditions in Bath, Augusta and Warren counties. Clear conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Clarke counties.

For winter weather road conditions go to www.511Virginia.org, look at the orange bar on the top of the page and click on “Text Views” and then click on “Road Condition Table”. Look at the pull down box that lists all jurisdictions.  In this box individual counties can be chosen to view.
