VDOT schedules public meeting on Durant Road project in Covington

VDOT will host a “Pardon Our Dust” citizen information meeting concerning improvements to Durant Road (Route 154) in the city of Covington. The meeting is from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, in the Council Room of Covington City Hall, 333 W. Locust St., Covington. VDOT will make a brief presentation at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Citizens can come in during the meeting hours to discuss the project and its potential impacts for motorists and residents along Durant Road between Byrd Avenue and Thacker Avenue. Flaggers will control traffic during most of this project, which is scheduled from June 2018 through late summer 2019. Durant Road will be closed for up to 90 days during the project’s later stages. All work is weather permitting.

This project includes roadway, sidewalk and public-utility improvements along a 0.4-mile stretch of Durant Road. A new sidewalk will improve pedestrian access between the Rayon Terrace neighborhood and shopping areas on Thacker Avenue. The project will also cut back the rock slope along Durant Road and install a safety fence next to the new sidewalk. Other improvements include guardrail replacement, construction of a closed stormwater drainage system, and new water and sanitary sewer lines.
