VDOT: Road work in the Staunton District, Culpeper District for Sept. 16-20

VDOT has updated its schedule of road work and maintenance in the Staunton District and Culpeper District in the coming week.

Obtain traffic alerts and traveler information by dialing 511 or visiting 511Virginia.org. For other assistance, call the VDOT Customer Service Center, available 24 hours-a-day, seven days a week.

Citizens can dial 1-800-FOR- ROAD (1-800-367-7623) from anywhere in the state to report road hazards, ask transportation questions, or get information related to Virginia’s roads.

Staunton District


Alleghany County

Interstate 64

  • *NEW* Mile marker 38 to 39, eastbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Route 619 (Hayes Gap Road) – Road closed to through traffic between Route 616 (Rich Patch Road) and Route 657 (Pitzer Ridge Road) for pipe replacement, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Monday.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for ditch work, shoulder repairs, pothole repairs, pipe replacement and brush cutting. Mobile traffic control for tractor mowing. Weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • Mile marker 95 to 96, eastbound – Overnight right lane and shoulder closures for installation of traffic equipment, 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Monday through Friday nights.

Route 42 (Little Calfpasture Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Route 685 (Lehigh Road) and Route 1130 (East Village Lane) for paving operations, 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. through September 23.

Route 608 (Long Meadow Road) – Flagger and pilot-truck traffic control between Route 797 (Miller Road) and Route 641 (Fishersville Road) for paving. Potential for 24-hour operations through October 11.

Route 610 (Howardsville Turnpike) – Temporary road closures between Route 633 (Patton Farm Road) and Route 855 (Mill Creek Lane) for overhead utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through September 26.

Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between South Oak Lane and Chinquapin Drive for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor, through May 2025.

Route 635 (Barterbrook Road) – Closed between I-81 frontage roads (FR-217 and FR-218) for bridge replacement as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Follow posted detour. Expected completion summer 2025.

*UPDATE* Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) – Northbound shoulder closures between Route 834 (Hickory Hill Road) and Route 285 (Tinkling Spring Road) for commercial entrance construction, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Friday.

Route 644 (Frontier Drive) – Flagger and pilot-truck traffic control between Route 11 (Lee-Jackson Highway) and Staunton city limits for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through September 26 nights.

Route 664 (Mount Torrey Road) – Occasional flagger traffic control between Route 624 (Lyndhurst Road) and Route 610 (Howardsville Turnpike) for utility work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through September 30.

Route 664 (Lyndhurst Road, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between Miami Avenue and Purdue Street for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor, through June 2025.

Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

Rockingham County 

Interstate 81

  • *NEW* Mile marker 237 to 264, northbound and southbound – Daytime right shoulder closures and overnight (8 p.m. to 7 a.m.) left lane closures for mowing and litter pickup, September 16 – 23.
  • *NEW* Mile marker 242 to 245, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for inspection of Route 679 overpass bridge, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday and Monday nights (September 15-16).
  • Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures as needed, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through December 2026. Overnight slow-roll closures as needed, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Expect delays. 24/7 shoulder closures. Traffic restrictions are related to Route 33 bridge and interchange project.
  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 244 to 248, northbound and southbound – Overnight lane closures or daytime shoulder closures including along Exit 245 off-ramps for rock and soil testing, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. for nighttime work and 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to daytime work. Estimated completion October 10.

Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger and pilot-truck traffic control between Dry Run Road and Switzer Lake Road for road widening project, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through December.

Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) –Overnight lane closures eastbound and westbound between Vine Street/Hawkins Street and Terri Drive due to bridge work, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. nights through January 2026. Single-lane traffic on bridge over railway just west of I-81. Shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 25 miles an hour with automated speed enforcement. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement.

*UPDATE* Route 727 (Sangersville Road) –Flagger traffic control between Route 613 (Spring Creek Road) and Route 42 (Warm Springs Pike) for paving operations, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through October 4.

*NEW* Route 7 Business (Main Street, Berryville) – Eastbound and westbound overnight alternating lane closures for paving operations between western and eastern intersections with Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway), 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights.

*UPDATE* Route 7 Business (East Main Street, Berryville) – Flagger traffic control between Route 340 (Buckmarsh Street) and Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through November 1.

Warren County 

Interstate 66

  • Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder closures at various locations including along Exit 6 off-ramp for utility work, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. through September 30.
  • Mile marker 7 to 15, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures for utility work, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through September 30.
  • Mile marker 14 to 15, eastbound – Right shoulder closures for utility work, with daytime and nighttime work hours possible. Estimated completion September 27.

Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) – Southbound right shoulder closures of on-ramp to westbound I-66 for utility work, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through September 30.

*NEW* Route 619 (Rivermont Drive) – Flagger traffic control between Route 679 (Catlett Mountain Road/South River Road) and Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) for inspection of bridge over South Fork Shenandoah River, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Route 658 (Rockland Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) and Route 705 (Fishnet Boulevard) for construction of bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway. Estimated completion December 2025.

Culpeper District


Albemarle County 

(UPDATE) Equipment installation – Expect intermittent lane and shoulder closures, Monday through Friday, 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. in the following areas:

  • Interstate 64 eastbound between mile marker 102 and mile marker 105
  • Interstate 64 westbound between mile marker 107 and mile marker 102

(NEW) Litter pickup – Expect a mobile work zone with right shoulder closures Wednesday from 9-10 a.m. between mile marker 125 and mile marker 118.

Soil borings – Expect lane and shoulder closures Monday through Friday in the following area:

  • Route 631 (Rio Road East), mobile, alternating lane closures between Route 650 (Gasoline Alley) and Route 768 (Pen Park Road) in the northbound and southbound lanes, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

(UPDATE) Paving – Expect mobile, alternating lane closures in the following areas:

  • Interstate 64, between mile marker 128 and mile marker 132 eastbound, Monday through Friday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the westbound lanes, nightly, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Route 20 (Scottsville Road), between Route 6 (Irish Road) and Route 708 (Red Hill Road) in the northbound and southbound lanes, nightly through Friday, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

(NEW) Interstate 64 – Pavement marking. Expect a mobile work zone with alternating eastbound lane closures Monday through Friday from 8 p.m. to 10 a.m. between mile marker 125 and mile marker 118.

(UPDATE) Utility work under VDOT permit – Expect lane and shoulder closures in the following areas:

  • U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike), alternating lane closures between Route 240 (Crozet Avenue) and Route 797 (Hillsboro Lane) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Route 240 (Crozet Avenue), alternating lane closures between Route 691 (Jarmans Gap Road) and Route 240 (Three Notch’d Road) in the northbound and southbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Route 751 (Brownsville Road), both shoulders closed between Route 240 (Crozet Avenue) and U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Route 797 (Hillsboro Lane), right shoulder closures between U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) and Route 684 (Half Mile Branch Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

(UPDATE) Interstate 64 – Tree trimming. Expect lane and shoulder closures between mile marker 107 and mile marker 124 in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

(UPDATE) Interstate 64 – Bridge painting. Expect alternating lane closures between mile marker 129 and mile marker 130 in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Sunday through Thursday, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

U.S. 29 (Monacan Trail) – Pipe repairs/installation. Expect alternating lane closures between Route 697 (Sutherland Road) and Route 633 (Heards Mountain Road) in the northbound and southbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) – Roadway improvements. Expect alternating lane closures between Route 3416 (Angus Road) and Seminole Court in the northbound and southbound lanes, nightly, Monday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., 10 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, 9 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday, 8 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday.

Route 20 (Scottsville Road) – Bridge superstructure repairs/replacement. Expect temporary traffic signal with a traffic pattern shift at Route 708 (Red Hill Road). Route 708 is narrowed to one lane for construction on the bridge over the North Fork Hardware River. Please expect delays during high volume times of the day. Project completion date, Dec. 4, 2024.

(UPDATE) Route 635 (Miller School Road) – Bridge joint repairs. Expect alternating lane closures between Route 688 (Midway Road) and U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) in the northbound and southbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 641 (Frays Mill Road) – Road closed at Route 743 (Advance Mills Road) for replacement of bridge over Marsh Run. Drivers on U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) who need to access Route 743 north and west of the closure should use Route 607 (Cedar Grove Road). Expected completion date, Dec. 5, 2024.

Route 797 (Hillsboro Lane) – Rehabilitation project. Expect alternating lane closures between Route 684 (Half Mile Branch Road) and U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
