Valley League announces All-Star rosters

vbl2The 2015 Valley League All-Star game on Sunday, July 12, showcases the league’s rising collegiate stars in an annual event attended by baseball fans and Major League Baseball scouts alike at James Madison University’s Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg. The event is sponsored by Subway Restaurants and Daniel’s Imprint Sportswear.

Approximately 30 Major League Baseball scouts are expected to attend the event.

All-Star players from the 12-team league (see below) will compete in a 60-yard dash contest and home run derby in the afternoon, followed by a 7:30 p.m. game pitting the “North” against the “South.” The North squad is comprised of players from Aldie, Front Royal, Winchester, Charles Town, Strasburg and Woodstock. The South squad consists of players from Charlottesville, New Market, Harrisonburg, Staunton, Waynesboro and Covington.

Each squad includes 25 players. Each team is allowed one automatic pitcher selection and two automatic position players. The remainder of the team consists of selections from each team’s alternate nominations, with each team allowed two alternate position players and two alternate pitchers.

The North team is managed by Strasburg manager Stephanos Stroop and the South by Harrisonburg Turks manager Bob Wease. Managers of the teams were determined by the highest teams in the standings at the conclusion of games through Sunday, July 5.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and children under $12. Youth under the age of 16 wearing their team’s sports uniform (any sport) and accompanied by a paying adult will be admitted free. Teams in uniform will also be admitted free with at least one paying adult.

The gates open to the public at 3 p.m. Team batting practices will be from 3:30 to 4:50 p.m., followed by the 60-Yard Dash contest at 4:50 p.m. and the Home Run Derby at 5:20 p.m. Participants in the derby include J.J. Bissell, Harrisonburg; Jonathan Corbitt, Covington; Austin Edens, Staunton; Ryan Flick, Strasburg; Spencer Levine, Winchester; Cris Perez, Charlottesville; and Justin Woods, Woodstock.

The All-Star game continues to be played in Harrisonburg by unanimous vote of the VBL Board of Directors because of its central location and excellent playing field, according to Commissioner Don Lemish. The teams share the responsibility for conducting the event, led by events coordinator Teresa Wease, assisted by Col Donald Harper, the assistant to the commissioner.

The Valley Baseball League is a wooden-bat collegiate summer league, chartered in 1897 and sanctioned by the NCAA, funded in part by a grant with Major League Baseball, and affiliated with the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball.

Valley League has produced well over 1,000 professional baseball players. Last year, 27 Valley League alumni were playing in the Major Leagues. In the 2015 MLB Draft, 46 former players were drafted.
