UVA volleyball releases 2016 schedule

AFP

uva volleyballVirginia volleyball head coach Dennis Hohenshelt announced the Cavaliers’ 2016 schedule on Friday (July 1), which will feature 13 home matches, including one tournament at Memorial Gymnasium.

After finishing with its third-straight winning season in 2015, UVA will start the season with four tournament dates.

“We are pleased with the schedule we put together,” Hohenshelt said. “Our goal every year is to create a non-conference schedule that will be challenging as well as able to put us in a great RPI situation heading into league play. All 12 teams we face in the first four weeks will do that for us. It will be challenging for the six new faces that are joining our program, but with our senior leadership we should be able to navigate it while incorporating the newcomers into our system. I would expect the 10-week ACC schedule to be as tough as ever as our league continues to flourish with many talented coaches, players, and teams.”

UVA opens the season with the Fairfield Inn & Suites Cavalier Classic on Aug. 26-27 featuring Buffalo, George Washington and Northwestern. Virginia will play Buffalo and George Washington on Friday and Northwestern on Saturday.

The Cavaliers will play in three road tournaments during the month of September.

Leading off those events is LSU’s Tiger Classic (Sept. 2-3), which will include LSU, Southern Miss and Connecticut. UVA will then travel to Lexington, Ky., for Kentucky’s Bluegrass Battle (Sept. 9-10) where the Cavaliers will face St. Louis as well as 2015 NCAA tournament teams Kentucky and Marquette. Virginia concludes its non-conference slate with the Baylor Classic, which features matches against Baylor, Washington State and College of Charleston.

Virginia will play a 20-match ACC schedule, which includes home-and-away contests against Wake Forest, Duke, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Pitt. UVA will open its conference schedule in Memorial Gymnasium by hosting Wake Forest (Sept 23) and Duke (Sept 24).

The remaining home ACC matches are against Georgia Tech (Oct. 7), Clemson (Oct. 8), Florida State (Oct. 21), Miami (Oct. 22), Syracuse (Nov. 4), Boston College (Nov. 6), Virginia Tech (Nov. 25) and Pitt (Nov. 26).

Along with the home-and-away opponents, UVA travels to defending ACC champion Louisville (Nov. 11) and NCAA tournament participant North Carolina (Nov. 18).

UVA returns three starters from 2015 and welcomes the No. 30 ranked recruiting class according to Prepvolleyball.com, Hohenshelt’s third nationally-ranked recruiting class.
