UVa. to host Notre Dame football in 2015

Virginia will host the University of Notre Dame at Scott Stadium in 2015, as announced today by the Atlantic Coast Conference. The ACC announced which league members the Fighting Irish will play in the first three seasons of their football partnership with the conference that begins with the 2014 season.

As part of the agreement to join the Atlantic Coast Conference, Notre Dame will play five ACC teams each year, alternating between three home games and two away and two home games and three away each year. Notre Dame will face every ACC team at least once in the first three-year rotation of games.

Virginia’s 2015 non-conference schedule also includes home games with Boise State (Sept. 26) and William & Mary (TBA) and a road game at UCLA (Sept. 5). The specific date of the Notre Dame game will be announced at a later date.

“Bringing a program like Notre Dame into Scott Stadium falls in line with the type of competitive scheduling we have done for the upcoming seasons,” said Virginia head coach Mike London.  “Our tremendous fan base will get to see some of the top programs in the nation come to Scott Stadium in the coming years like Oregon this season and UCLA in 2014.  In addition to Notre Dame, we are hosting Boise State in 2015 and adding the Irish falls in line with all the exciting aspects going on with Virginia football right now. Between the upgrade in facilities, the new assistant coach hires and the wide-range of talented student-athletes that want to play football at UVa, it’s an exciting time to be a Cavalier.”

“We’ve known for quite some time that this is how the 2015 schedule would play out,” said Virginia Executive Associate Athletics Director Jon Oliver. “Our approach to scheduling is consistent with what Mike London has said about playing the best teams out there to attract the best recruits and to continue to build our football program.”

Virginia has faced Notre Dame only once before in 1989 at the Kickoff Classic at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J. The No. 2 Irish bested the Cavaliers, 36-13.
