connor jones virginiaUVA junior right-hander Connor Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) has been named the ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week, as announced Monday by the league office. Jones shares the honor with North Carolina’s Zac Gallen. It marks Jones’ first career ACC Pitcher of the Week honor and the first for a UVA pitcher this season.

Jones fired his first career complete game and shutout last Friday in a 3-0 victory at Boston College. He tossed a one-hitter; the only hit he surrendered was a clean single by Donovan Casey to lead off the second inning, while only two BC runners advanced to second base in the game. He walked four batters and also struck out four.

It was the first nine-inning shutout by a UVA pitcher since Nathan Kirby’s no-hitter at Pitt on April 4, 2014, and the first nine-inning complete game by a UVA hurler since Brandon Waddell went the distance against Vanderbilt in the College World Series Finals on June 24, 2014.

Jones was under pressure throughout the game as the Cavaliers maintained a 1-0 lead until scoring two insurance runs in the ninth inning.

Virginia plays host to Longwood at 5 p.m. Wednesday before welcoming North Carolina to Davenport Field this weekend for a three-game series. Jones and Gallen likely will square off as the starting pitchers in the 6 p.m. Friday contest.
