ACC letters - full-colorUVa. outfielder Joe McCarthy (So., Scranton, Pa.) has been named the ACC Co-Player of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office. McCarthy shares the distinction with Clemson infielder Steve Wilkerson.

It marks the first career ACC Player of the Week honor for McCarthy and the third for a UVa player this season, including the second straight. Derek Fisher earned the distinction following the first week of the season and Nick Howard claimed the award last week.

McCarthy had hits in all five games last week and went 5-for-11 (.455) with seven RBI in a three-game sweep of Virginia Tech. Virginia went 5-0 in those contests, including four ACC victories.

He scored the game-winning runs in both the Friday and Saturday wins over the Hokies and went 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBI while falling a triple shy of the cycle in UVa’s 9-2 victory in Game 2.

McCarthy tripled in a pair of runs in the first inning of the Sunday game versus the Hokies, leading the way to a 7-4 Virginia win. He also had a hit in UVa’s Monday win at Miami and the Wednesday triumph over Longwood.

McCarthy and the Cavaliers are back in action at 5 p.m. Tuesday at home against Old Dominion.
